Hawaiian is one of the official languages of the American state of Hawaii and spoken by about 8,000 people on the Hawaiian Islands. It is a Polynesian language and is one of the oldest living languages in the world.
The Hawaiian language had a tumultuous history. After Hawaii was annexed by the USA in 1899, the language was on the brink of extinction. But a huge renaissance of Hawaiian culture has occurred over the past four decades, and today the number of people interested in learning the language has increased considerably. In 1978, the Hawaiian language was recognized as one of the official languages of the state of Hawaii.

As many would agree Hawaii is a paradise on earth and a dream holiday destination. So if you are planning to visit Hawaii you can enrich your Hawaiian experience by learning the language. Before Hawaii was discovered by Captain Cook in 1778, Hawaiian was strictly an oral language. After the arrival of first missionaries in 1820, the written language came into existence. The written Hawaiian language is based on English letters and uses an alphabet of 13 letters. It comprises of five vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and eight consonants (h, k, l, m, n, p, w). It also includes the `okina' or glottal stop which is an apostrophe like symbol that indicates a pause in the word. In the Hawaiian language a symbol over a vowel indicates that the vowel sound is to be elongated. Also a consonant is always followed by a vowel which means all Hawaiian words end in a vowel.
