About

I’m a native Afrikaans speaker from South Africa.

That includes teaching young children (4-6 years old) at my own kindergarten, homeschooling my own children and other children (7-18 years old), teaching different cultures at a private school – Afrikaans and English (10 -13 years old), teaching ESL online to Chinese children (6 – 12 years old) and teaching Russian adults online. I work in the EST time zone. I teach with Skype and Zoom.

Teaching Approach

1. I engage with my students online: I show my students that I'm both visible and available. I’ll also be welcoming them to their new learning community – just as I would in any traditional classroom. I also develop professional relationships with my students and make their experience far more personal and memorable.

2. Being supportive and like motivating my students. I try to concentrate on the workplace (or real life) performance, rather than on extraneous facts and theories. Provide options. Adults usually like choices that promote self-direction.

3. Use A Mix Of Learning Tools For Better Engagement. I use audio, video and pictures. I work with a mix of activities that make the content more interesting and exciting, increasing student engagement.

4. Provide Ongoing Feedback. With constructive feedback offered as soon as possible so that students can clearly identify which behaviors or skills need to be improved.

5. I use the Share option on Skype to share materials with my students and to get them more engaged.

6. I give my students as much opportunity as possible to practice their speaking skills.
