About Tutor

I’m a native Afrikaans speaker from South Africa.
I am pleased to submit my application for an Afrikaans or English online teaching position with your school. With strong interests in youth and child development, I am drawn to this position as an opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of children and adults of all ages.
I currently reside in Ecuador, South America. I work on the EST (America) time zone.

Experience

I currently reside in Ecuador, South America, where I teach English at a language university. I teach children, teens, and adults of all ages (6-52 years old) and all levels. I am TEFL certified and I have 15 years’ extensive experience working with children and adults of all ages. I taught both Afrikaans and English as first and second languages. That includes teaching young children (4-6 years old) at my own kindergarten, homeschooling my own children and other children (7-18 years old), teaching different cultures at a private school – Afrikaans and English (10 -13 years old), teaching ESL online to Chinese children (6 – 12 years old) and teaching Russian adults online. I work in the EST time zone. I teach with Skype and Zoom.
I have excellent English and Afrikaans language skills and a good, neutral accent. I’m flexible and love working as part of a team. I’m able to teach students of all ages.
• Good knowledge and teaching of Microsoft programmes (CAT Gr. 10 - 12)
• Skilled in creating additional teaching materials, lesson plans and curriculum.
• Teaching ages 5 - 18 years and adult students.
• Teaching different cultures.
• Experience in the British and U.S. education systems.
• Very patient and energetic
• Use songs, poems, hand puppets, pictures, and flashcards to teach young children.
I like using games.
• I taught conversational English, general English, English for traveling purposes and
business English to adult Russian students.
• I taught Afrikaans in a private primary school in Namibia and also to homeschoolers.

Teaching Approach

1. I engage with my students online: I show my students that I'm both visible and available. I’ll also be welcoming them to their new learning community – just as I would in any traditional classroom. I also develop professional relationships with my students and make their experience far more personal and memorable.

2. Being supportive and like motivating my students. I try to concentrate on the workplace (or real life) performance, rather than on extraneous facts and theories. Provide options. Adults usually like choices that promote self-direction.

3. Use A Mix Of Learning Tools For Better Engagement. I use audio, video and pictures. I work with a mix of activities that make the content more interesting and exciting, increasing student engagement.

4. Provide Ongoing Feedback. With constructive feedback offered as soon as possible so that students can clearly identify which behaviors or skills need to be improved.

5. I use the Share option on Skype to share materials with my students and to get them more engaged.

6. I give my students as much opportunity as possible to practice their speaking skills.
