English lessons for children

I have more than 7 years of experience teaching English Language Learners who are children, ages 4-17, in both a small classroom and an online setting. For younger children, I use music, engaging models and props, as well as puzzles and games to help them stay engaged while learning. For older children, I use photos, video, conversational English, and materials that reflect their personal interests, skills, or hobbies.

English for beginners

I have taught beginner English students from ages 4-18 in both a small classroom setting, and an online 1 to 1 learning environment.

Conversational English

I have taught older students who are intermediate learners, ages 10-16 in an online learning setting. We focus on a particular topic of interest or social setting in order to learn the vocabulary, sentence frames, context, and understanding of social cues. We apply those through conversations during the session/class. For Example, the lesson goal for the student is to discuss where he or she would like to travel and to talk about the things he/she would like to do during the trip. We will learn some basic sentence frames such as " I want to ____. I would like to go to ____. I would like to see ____. I have been to ____. I have not been to ___. The student would also learn English vocabulary to talk about the activities, foods, transportation, and general travel terms necessary to describe what he or she will do on the trip.

Reading and writing English

I have non-native English speakers to write basic sentences and paragraphs to develop and share their own personal ideas, as well as to analyze the content, strategies, and ideas in a piece of writing. I have taught students ages 10-19 who are native English speaker, to write essays, research papers, non-fiction narratives, and poetry in a classroom setting.

English lifestyle and culture

I have taught a variety of skill levels, from beginner to advanced intermediate, from ages 4 to 19, about the differences in English culture and their own native culture, most often students from China and Ukraine. I have been able to help them understand some particular differences in the English language spoken in Britain and Europe versus the English language spoken in the United States and North America.

About

I am a native English speaker who enjoys traveling and find it fascinating to learn to communicate with others during my travels in their native languages. I am a teacher professionally and at heart, and a lifelong learner. I have taught students of all ages and particularly enjoy teaching learners 12 years and older. I have been married for 23+ years, and have four children. I have taught ELL learners from China and Ukraine online and in a classroom setting. I love to visit cities and enjoy living in a rural setting. Our family has chickens, cats, and a dog, and hope to have some sheep and pigs soon. We are not a working farm, but enjoy spending time growing a small garden and raising some animals as a hobby. My other hobbies include reading, writing poetry, singing and listening to music, cooking, and traveling with my husband and children. Meeting people of diverse backgrounds and learning about their cultures is something I have always enjoyed and believe is one way for all people to be better global citizens and humans. I would love to have the opportunity to tutor you in order to improve your English language skills and accomplish your professional and educational goals!

Teaching Approach

English Language Acquisition for the non-native English speaker can be approached using multiple methodologies. I provide the learner with opportunities to gain knowledge and understanding of the structure of the language, while focusing on their ability to communicate in contextually and socially appropriate ways. With younger students, I use music, cultural applications, and conversational practice to keep them engaged, to deepen their understanding, and to allow them to apply what they have learned through conversing in different role-playing and problem solving scenarios.
